DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

I've been hearing about this for at least a year now. I'm in Danbury, CT (06810).

I checked the availability (while signed into my account) ... put in my zip code and it said it was available (finally!), but I did not have the proper equipment.

I called comcast and the representative confirmed it was available, and provided me a list of DVR set top boxes that were compatible. She said to bring my current box in and swap it, and make sure I get one of the boxes on the list.

I take a half day from work, go swap the box and the woman behind the counter told me it's not available here. She doesn't know why both the website AND the phone represntative said it was.

I thought I was being punked.... does anyone know when this will actually be available??

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Its currently only available for the most part for Motorola and Pace boxes.  I believe your area is Cisco and SA.  Comcast has said most of the country should have it be year end but we all know how that goes.

click the link and read about the new features coming to the SA Cisco market.  You can ask questions also.

This is not "new" information. The date on the posting at the link is May 18, 2010! In this area, we have had this "new" guide for almost one year. And, in the 21st century, it remains a poor excuse for an onscreen TV guide!

To be clear, May 18, 2010 is whan that specific blog started. I answer additional questions and post comments on that blog as they come in (as recently as this week) The date of the submissions and responses are listed along the left hand side.

All Cisco and Scientific-Atlanta cable boxes in all areas will be getting some sort of guide update and improvements starting over the summer. We are still on track to start delivering this new guide to many locations over the summer. We are still devleoping the rollout schedule and should have some more specific announcements in the next 30 days

Due to the number of Comcast locations and other important projects, not all customers will receive the new guide over the summer, some locations locations will be scheduled to get the new guide in the fall.

Some of the new features that are included in the summer release are listed below:

myDVR Manager: From the internet and the Xfinity TV app, customers can: set recordings, view/modify scheduled recordings, view completed recordings, modify series priority lists, etc.
http://xfinity.comcast.net/mydvr/how-to/

Caller ID to the TV See who's calling, right from your TV and PC! Comcast Universal Caller ID takes the guesswork out of incoming calls. http://www.comcast.net/callerid

Xfinity TV Application: The ability to use your iPad to change channels.
http://www.xfinity.com/help/internet/mobile-tv-app/

HSN Shop-by-Remote: A convenient, new way to make HSN purchases simply by using your remote. http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV_Guide_Shop-By-Remote_0110.pdf

Request for Info: Know more, save more! Introducing an easy way to request valuable coupons and info from advertisers simply by using your remote.
http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Request%20For%20Information.pdf

Ready Remind and Ready Record: Now you can conveniently set program reminders or recordings directly from certain TV show and movie advertisements.
http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Ready%20Remind%20Record.pdf

Several customer facing issues are also resolved in this release, including the following:

- DVR Boxes losing functionality of 15 second rewind and 5 minute skip back after being online for a significant period of time.

- DVR over-recording issues with New and Repeat episodes

- RNG 200s only: When watching live TV, pressing rewind may rewind all the way to the beginning of the buffer and bring the customer back to live TV.

- RNG 200s only: Audio /video occasionally cuts in and out after swapping channels.

In some areas (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Minnesota and New Mexico), we plan to deliver On-Screen Guide 2.0 http://www.xfinity.com/onscreenguide2 this year to the Cisco RNG series (RNG 100, 150 and 200) of cable boxes.

Other SA/Cisco areas that are in states that I have not listed above are not currently targeted for On-Screen Guide 2.0 this year and some of those areas (that I have not listed) may get our On-Screen Guide 3.0 (also called the X1 guide) this year or next year.

The long term plan is to get all of our newest cable boxes (regardless of hardware manufacturer or geography) onto a common guide starting in 2013 to provide a more consistent experience.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Don't want to hijack this thread but I live in Springfield, VT.  I'm on a SA network.  I've been reading about the DVR manager for over a year.  The sad part is I work for the competition (Fios) and this isn't a bash session per se, but the lack of support for my area regarding all the next gen cable network goodies is disheartening.  If there were an alternative to Comcast for a real triple play there would be definite upgrades all across the network.  I do work with stb's and all the upgrades required, but come on over a year?  I know in areas where we have competition (comcast, cox, cablevision, etc) they have all the goods.  If we can deliver Multi room dvr, caller id tv, etc., on both networks simultaneously then I have to think that it shouldn't be too hard for someone the size of Comcast to push out these minimal upgrades.  Dish network has it, as does Direct TV.  I love my cable for my internet speed, it does work flawless in my case, but am really contemplating moving to satellite for tv and back to copper for my phone and data via cable.  I will not wait another year for upgrades that others have had for two years or more, and it would be nice to get more info than, probably this summer.  That is pretty vague.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Dear ComcastTed...

While this may be a blog that is constantly updated by yourself, it presents very little "new" information and contains many promises of great improvements that are "on the way." Needless to say, these promises have been out there for a very long time.

The fact of the matter remains that the onscreen TV guide that users of Scientific Atlanta and Cisco equipment have been forced into using is OBSOLETE! Many of the so-called "improvements" that were provided with the switch from the previous guide are nothing of the sort.

Furthermore, since the push of this "upgrade," our DVR service has never been as good as it was before the change. We have five DVRs for which we pay a fairly large sum to Comcast every month. These DVRs are fickle, to say the least. There is no pattern of faults that can be ascribed to any ONE of them, let alone any kind of pattern that can be ascribed to ALL of them.

Some of the difficulties:

-Freezing of picture with massive pixelation.

-Sound dropouts on all channels. Anywhere from 10 to 20 times during an hour-long show. At times, they are not dropouts; the sound simply fails.

-Programs that do not record when set.

-Programs that record when NOT set.

-Messages that the DVR service is not authorized.

-Messages that a particular channel is not authorized.

-Required power source disconnection on the average of once every other week, plus each time the DVR freezes and refuses to accept commands from the remote control.

-Incredibly slow loading of program data after the application of power. Usually, the entire guide is not loaded until a minimum 24-hour time span has elapsed.

-A most archaic search function.

-Inability to precisely manage recording times.

-Inability to suppress useless messages, such as "Recording finished."

-Inability to watch a recording-in-progress without incurring unpredictable results with the final recording (for example, the recording may be missing or incomplete or some other show has been recorded).

That is the short list.

Let me add, for the record, that technicians have visited my residence and signal strength is acceptable. I have exchanged the DVRs on numerous occasions at the local Comcast office. All to no avail. The problems persist and, from reading the posts in the forums, it does not appear that Comcast is in any great hurry to rectify them.

I stand by my original post: the "new" guide shown in the illustration is not new. That technology went out the window at the turn of the century!

Notice I didn't complain about the advertisements. I don't even notice them any more. I will also state that no advertisement presented has ever caused me to purchase any additional service.

Thank you.

We are in the final stages of our on-location testing and and as mentioned have plans to start delivering the newer features to our SA-Cisco customers starting over the summer.

I will be able to provide some more concrete details and locations in the next 30 says or so.

Apologies for the delay but the new features are on their way.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing. Many of the issues you mentioned are corrected in the upcoming release and are a combination of software and firmware fixes.

Our Connecticut customers are scheduled to be some of the first to receive this improved experience over the summer.

We have seen significantly reduced instances of the unintended Not Authorized screen as part of the software patch that was distributed to all of our SA-Cisco locations.

We have also worked with Cisco to make necessary firmware changes in the upcoming guide release. These changes have been shown to eliminate the unintended Not Authorized occurrences that have been observed.

The firmware update included in this upcoming release also has the HDMI cables working very well with the HD Pass-Through feature.

The search function that is in this guide is a bit better than what was previously available (The previous guide allowed for browse by the first letter of the first word only). The search function in the present guide allows for a search on an entire word. We do have plans to further improve this current experience to include an On Demand Search and a search by actor-director.

The new guide is certainly new to our customers in Scientific-Atlanta and Cisco markets and certainly newer than the previous guide (from 1998).

The intention of the new guide experience is to have a consistent guide that mostly matches what we have in the majority of Comcast homes. This will allow a standard look and feel across the company and the country. This single guide experience is especially helpful for customers who move from one Comcast area into another.

At the same time this is an improved customer experience with additional features for our customers in SA areas and gets us much closer to adding interactive applications like caller ID to the TV to these areas.

We know that we have some more work to do; a lot of the customer feedback has been implemented into our On-Screen Guide 2.0 and On-Screen 3.0 products that are starting to roll out now.

We have a new guide (X1 or also known as On-Screen Guide 3.0) live to customers in Augusta, GA with a few thousand customers and targeted for an additional market this year. We have also demonstrated this guide at a few places like the Philadelphia Home Show and the Philadelphia Design Home.

So is CT going to be before those states?  Or after those states?  Or is there no ETA.  I have been chasing cust'r service for LITERALLY over a year to get an answer, and have been being told since the first time I asked they are being beta tested in my area (though I can't get on the beta test).  The online rep, the phone rep I spoke to when I set up my account, AND the technician "yes"'ed me up and down to get me to sign the contract that I could use my iPad app with the CISCO DVRs "NO PROBLEM AT ALL".  Now that I've signed the contract, and tried to get the Cisco box to use the app, they have all gone back to the old "Doesn't work in CT with any boxes, no ETA on if/when it will happen".

CT is not scheduled to get On-Screen Guide 2.0.

However, all of our Cisco and Scientific-Atlanta DVRs in all areas will be getting a guide update and improvements starting over the summer. We are still on track to start delivering this new guide to many locations in that time frame.

We are still developing the rollout schedule and should have some more specific announcements very soon. CT will be one of our first Cisco locationsto get myDVR Manager.

Due to the number of Comcast locations and other important customer-facing projects, not all customers will receive the new guide over the summer, some locations will be scheduled to get the new guide in the fall.

Some of the new features that are included in the summer release are listed below:

myDVR Manager: From the internet and the Xfinity TV app, customers can: set recordings, view/modify scheduled recordings, view completed recordings, modify series priority lists, etc.

Ready Remind and Ready Record: Now you can conveniently set program reminders or recordings directly from certain TV show and movie advertisements.
http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Ready%20Remind%20Record.pdf

The long term plan is to get all of our newest cable boxes (regardless of hardware manufacturer or geography) onto a common guide starting in 2013 to provide a more consistent experience.

The existing XFINITY TV application supports the "Play Now" feature for On Demand. This allows our customers to watch On Demand content from select networks directly on their iPad. All iPad customers with the XFINITY TV App can access Play Now as well as search for their favorite shows in the TV listings with no restriction on the type of cable box that you may have.

Now, is the functionality to change channels on your DVR cable box live part of the myDVR package/software?  Or is that another, separate function/offering?  Seems a little thing, I know, but if/when I get that, I can use my iPad to control everything ;-)

"all of our Cisco and Scientific-Atlanta DVRs in all areas will be getting a guide update and improvements starting over the summer"

It's too bad that Comcast needs to refer to these as "improvements." If the homework had been done BEFORE the Cisco and Scientific Atlanta boxes were trashed with last year's "upgrade," there would not be the need to provide "improvements."

All I want is some relatively trouble-free TV viewing (which I had BEFORE the trashing). Is THAT really too much to ask for the roughly $280.00 I pay each month?

As not to hijack this thread, can you send me a PM (Private Message) with a list of the troubles are you having? Please include your contact information and I can have someone investigate further.

All of the improvements I listed (repasted below) were never available with your previous on-screen guide.

That functionality is currently a separate offering but also scheduled for this year.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT

My question is this if CT is not going to get the guide 2.0 upgrade nor the new x1 what is my incentive to stay with Comcast? Why does CT keep getting passed over? The guide we use now is basiclly the same guide I had in 2003. It has a few new features but it looks exactlly the same. All the while FIOS, Dish, DirectTV and AT&T keep upgrading in my area. It seems more like poor planning on Comcast's part or just a blantent disreguard for their customers here in CT. I'd like to stay with Comcast however this lack of service in my area and the amount of money I pay for service is unforgivable. With all this said when can we, the people who live in CT see an actual upgrade to our service? This summer or are we going to end up being the one's pushed back to the fall ( or worse 2013)? Is it going to be the same poorly designed menu system or some sort of functionalty upgrade?

If you live in an area of CT where we use Scientific-Atlanta or Cisco branded cable boxes, we expect additional guide features to be added over the summer.

Some of the features that are included in the summer release are listed below:

myDVR Manager: From the internet and the Xfinity TV app, customers can: set recordings, view/modify scheduled recordings, view completed recordings, modify series priority lists, etc.
http://xfinity.comcast.net/mydvr/how-to/

Caller ID to the TV See who's calling, right from your TV and PC! Comcast Universal Caller ID takes the guesswork out of incoming calls. http://www.comcast.net/callerid

Xfinity TV Application: The ability to use your iPad to change channels.
http://www.xfinity.com/help/internet/mobile-tv-app/

HSN Shop-by-Remote: A convenient, new way to make HSN purchases simply by using your remote. http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV_Guide_Shop-By-Remote_0110.pdf

Request for Info: Know more, save more! Introducing an easy way to request valuable coupons and info from advertisers simply by using your remote.
http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Request%20For%20Information.pdf

Ready Remind and Ready Record: Now you can conveniently set program reminders or recordings directly from certain TV show and movie advertisements.
http://www.comcast.net/newguide/iTV%20Guide%20Ready%20Remind%20Record.pdf

If you live in an area of CT where we use Motorola branded cable boxes, we do have some minor feature additions and functionality changes scheduled also for over the summer. Based on your 2003 mention, I am guessing that you live in an area where we use Motorola cable boxes.

The Xfinity X1 platform is very new and only currently available in two markets right now (Augusta, GA and parts of Boston, MA for less than a month).

We do have plans for additional markets this year with much wider deployments of this guide in 2013.

We recently started with our first customer deployments of the new guide features (including myDVR Manager) to customers in parts of east Texas and Louisiana this week.

The majority of our customer deployments are scheduled to begin soon after the summer Olympics have completed (after August 12).

Our very first locations in August are scheduled to be in Connecticut, including your zip code.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT

I'm in East Texas (Houston/Cypress area, specifically) and I haven't seen any changes yet. Does that mean I won't see anything until after the Olympics? I was planning on trading out my RNG 200 yet again today for many of the problems someone listed above (sound dropping out/failing numerous times an hour, inconsistencies in recording programs) but if the new rollout is supposed to correct some of these problems I might as well wait. Will this new roll out mean I can control my RNG 200 via my computer (My DVR Manager, I guess)?

I'm in East Texas (Houston/Cypress area, specifically) and I haven't seen any changes yet. Does that mean I won't see anything until after the Olympics? I was planning on trading out my RNG 200 yet again today for many of the problems someone listed above (sound dropping out/failing numerous times an hour, inconsistencies in recording programs) but if the new rollout is supposed to correct some of these problems I might as well wait. Will this new roll out mean I can control my RNG 200 via my computer (My DVR Manager, I guess)?

The areas that were updated this week are listed below, I should have stated "very east Texas".

LA: Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Greenwood, Desoto Parish, Stonewall

TX: Waskom, Harrison County, Panola County

Other Comcast locations (including Houston) are scheduled for both the guide fixes and the new features combined starting after the end of the Olympics (after August 13). This update will include myDVR manager (the ability to access your DVR via your computer or smartphone via the XFINITY TV app).

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT

[ Edited ]

Thank you.

John & Dave

I fully second this post, Ive had the same exact situation with every detail mirroring what you have gone through including multiple technicians, and the problem not being solved.

I also have a new problem with my DVR when I hit the On Demand button it just says Feature Not Availible. This is getting ridiculous! I'm paying way too much for a service that works half the time and with some of the features. It seems I cant record a single program without there being some sort of "hiccup" in the network. I understand what you're going through and I wish they could fix this... I am also in the Danbury CT area

Re: [SUBJECT EDITED] DVR Issues

Indeed, we are certainly not the only folks going through these hassles. While ComcastTeds (the Comcast employee who has responded to several of the posts) certainly has responded has been as forward as is probably allowed to be, I am not certain that the full picture of how bad these situations are is making an impression. If this was a FREE service it would be unacceptable. The fact that countless thousands are paying hundreds of dollars every month just makes it intolerable.

There are two issues that really continue to trouble me. The first is that there is no way for Comcast to address the problems all at once with a nationwide push of the new firmware/software. ComcastTeds has replied to me that these must be pushed out on a site-by-site basis. There has been chatter on these forums for YEARS about the upgrades and it appears that only a small number of subscribers have been taken care of.

The second issue is that I am bombarded by advertisements for "improvements" that never materialize in my area (it's northern Vermont, by the way, and that's why I took the "Danbury, CT" out of the subject line). We have been solicited to make use of the DVR Manager on numerous occasions by US mail, email, and Internet advertising. After a few times of going through the process to use the DVR Manager and being met (FINALLY) by the message that the service is not available in your area, I have stopped falling for the invitation. I have correspondence that goes back over two years appealing to me to make use of the non-existent DVR Manager (which was also taken out of the subject line beacuse none of this thread really has to do with DVR MANAGER, per se).

So, since the cable monopoly continues to reign here in northern Vermont, I am pretty much forced to stick it out. Satellite is out of the question because the cost is more prohibitive than what Comcast is charging and the satellite version of the "triple play" involves a telephone company also.

ComcastTeds has indicated that further pushes of some fixes will occur after the Olympics. I shall wait and see if the "better customer experience" that ComcastTeds keeps mentioning really materializes!

DVR Manager should be available this week in your area of Danbury, CT.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Comcast Ted,

I too, have experienced the pain of waiting years for DVR manager, etc. My question is I am in a SA/CISCO area of New Haven, CT. My zipcode is 06512 but it is New Haven not East Haven who has Motorolla boxes. Can you give me an ETA of when this rollout will happen for me? I have been patiently waiting, thanks.

Thanks for your patience. All of the Cisco or Scientific-Atlanta branded DVRs in CT are scheduled to get the DVR Manager feature this week, some DVRs received the update last night; the remaining DVRs are scheduled for this week.

So my guide went from 16:9 to 4:3 ratio does that mean I received the update? What is the best way to know that it has been received? Thanks again for the info.

The version number (S25, S26) of the on-screen guide for your cable box can be found in the guide’s setup menu.

Press the Menu button twice on the silver Comcast remote control, select Setup, then Cable Box setup, arrow down to Configuration and “Select to display” and press OK/Select.

The line immediately underneath the Review Configuration header will show you the version of the guide currently on your cable box. The first few characters (S25p3 or S26) indicate the guide code number.

A change in guide code number on that box to S26 would indicate an update to the guide.

You could also try to sign in to http://xfinity.comcast.net/ and select TV Listings and then DVR Manager, that should log you in right away to your DVRs.

Let me have someone take a look at your account. It can take up to 24 hours for the DVR Manager to be active for the first time.

Re: DVR Manager -- Danbury, CT (I think it's a myth)

Any luck? I still don't have those features. I called customer care and they siad the menu was updated for debugging purposes and the services would be rolled out by the 28th of August. Does that seem accurate that there is a testing period first? Please advise

You should have access to DVR Manager now, someone is reviewing your account information and will contact you directly to help resolve. Thanks for your patience.

The team is looking at your account and your boxes. It appears to an incident specific to how your set tops are set up in our system. The team is actively working. They will reach out if they need anything.

For what it's worth, I have seen it working myself in CT this week on an Cisco RNG 200 and have seen the reports that many in your area have already been using DVR Manager this week.

I will send you a PM with the ticket number.

I'm having the same issue in Minneapolis. Should DVR Manager be working for me as well?

Minneapolis has not 100% completed their rollout of the new guide firmware and software. That is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month.

DVR Manager would be available to all DVRs in your area at that time. Thanks for your patience

As of today, they are still working on my issue. It has not been resolved. It's really disappointing.

Understood and apologies. I have seen email updates on your open issue last night and I know the teams are still actively working the problem that appears to be specific to your account and equipment. I am confident that they will be able to get it resolved. Thanks for your patience.
