HDTV resolution Question

This is my First HDTV so I am Learning. But I have a Question .

I currently have the 4:3 overide set on the HD set top box so on the non HD channels it will automaticaly switch to wide screen format so i dont see the black on the sides and it fills the whole screen. but I have noticed that on the HD channels some show in 16:9 1280 X 720 and others show in my native resoltion of 16:9 1920X1080i.  It swithes back and forth depending on what show is on. is this just how they are brodcasting the show. or can i change any other settings to have all the HD channels show in my 16:9 1920X1080i native resolution without needing to do wide screen every time the show is in  1280 X 720.

Re: HDTV resolution Question

What box do you have?  With the Motorola DVR you select between 720p and 1080i, so all HD programs are provided as one or the other (which means you could set it to 1080i).  In either case, HD programming should fill the 16:9 screen, but sometimes may have the bars on the side if the program is 4:3.  Does your box allow you to select the output to be in the native resolution of the channel?

Re: HDTV resolution Question

I have the Motorola DCH3200 HD Box.

on the front of the HD box i have the format set to 1080i

I have the TV set to display at 16:9

under Diagnostics on the motorola under user settings status it shows 16:9, DVI output 1080i, and I have it to override the 4:3. I was able to change those settings earlier but for some reason it isnt letting me now unless i'm useing the wrong buttons

Just wondering though are not all HD chanels in 1080i  ??

No.  Currently some networks use 720p -- notably Fox, ABC, and ESPN.
