No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

Hi,

I subscribe to the Digital Preferred package in the 34481 area.  A year ago I upgraded to their HD package and did not receive any new stations.  After many hours on the phone and a couple of tech visits I finally called their Executive Care Center.  Well, it turned out that HD was (is) not available in this market.  I can receive the locally broadcast HD stations over-the-air in my travel trailer with an antenna.  I thought any local station that are available in HD had to be rebroadcast by the cable company in the clear.  My TV has a built in QAM tuner and up until recently I did receive a few digital stations over cable in the clear although, not in HD.  Any input on this situation would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

I have asked that a Comcast moderator look into this.

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

Well, Comcast Executive Care called me at home (they must read these posts) to tell me that their is no HD available in my market.  As if I didn't already know this (read as sarchasm).  Anyways, this still does not answer my question - Does a cable company have to rebroadcast local over-the-air HD stations?

Thanks, Bob

I asked for further clarification about Must Carry in your area, and the carriage arrangements with the local stations.  I'll let you know if I find out anything more.

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

Good Morning Bob,

I will clarify...

If a cable company offers HD Service in the Market where the Local Over The HD Channels are in question, then the Local Over The Air HD Channels become a "Must Carry".

At this time, in you area/market, we do not offer any HD Services. I have spoken to the area and they are working towards offerning HD soon.

I apologize for any inconvience or confusion.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

It burns me up that we pay a fortune for comcast tv but only get our local channels in central delaware in low definition--the reception looks like the late 50's with rabbit ears--why can't we get all our channels in HD--we get philly and baltimore in HD but the channels we most frequently watch remain stone age---I doubt that we will put up with this for long and will look to other providers to solve the problem.

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

Hello again,

Well we are almost at the end of another year and I still don't have HD available!  It has now been almost two years since the HD package was sold to me by a Comcast rep without actually being available.  That said, I was wondering if anyone could give me more insight as to why this is taking soooooooo long!?!  Is it a bandwidth problem?  Am I on a antiquated system?  Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks again, Bob

Bob

As an observer, I feel your pain on not getting any HD's on your neglected CC system.

Here's my 2 cents worth.  Comcast is not big in central Florida.  Comcast bought the Dunnellon & Williston systems in 2006.  Your system is a 625mhz HFC system, not the latest bandwidth, but at least the fiber & nodes are in place and it is not all analog.  More current systems are 750-860mhz.  The Williston Comcast system has less bandwidth & SD channels, and no HD also.  Your system also suffers from very low subscriber ratio against the number of homes passed at 23%.  This very low number of subs doesn't help much in the investment CC needs to make to upgrade the system.

The digital transistion by removing the analogs will help reclaim bandwidth to add more HD's instead of a partial system rebuild.  Upgrading the headend is another matter, another large investment.  Interconnecting the Dunnellon & Williston systems to the larger up to date Leesburg headend would be more beneficial than upgrading the existing headends.  Running fiber or a microwave link to Leesburg would be doable for CC to interconnect your system to Leesburg but is still 40-50 miles.

Comcast probably shouldn't have bought these 2 systems, it is opposite their business plan of acquiring many systems in an area, and interconnecting them.  These 2 systems probably would benefit by being sold to Brighthouse Networks, who already have a large presence in the area including Ocala, Crystal River, Inverness & Brooksville.  Connecting your system to an esisting local BH system or running fiber to Ocala would make more sense than CC keeping the systems and connecting to the Leesburg CC system.

It could be Comcast's plan not to do anything to these systems, and eventually dump them.  They probably were acquired as a larger buy of cable systems from Mickelson Media, when the purchase took place.

Perhaps it's time to bail out and find a satellite provider, since CC can not get you a straight answer.  I'd be tired of waiting also.

As it stated in my above post, Comcast sold me an HD package about two years ago.  At that time I purchased a new HD TV and a HD TiVo DVR with lifetime subscription.  Comcast tried for about three weeks to resolve the issue.  Finally they figured out that HD was not available.  It took a call to executive care to confirm this as the Orlando call center was still convinced that HD was available in my market.  Talk about not knowing what the other hand is doing.  I was not the least bit happy with the compensation they offered me.  I might as well kept my old TV and DVR.  Of course, Comcast did not care that I purchased new equipment due to their mistake.  So here I am with an expensive HD DVR that will not work with satellite.

Still not happy, Bob

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

I hope you are at least using your TIVO with your antenna to pull in the locals in HD until they finally get their act together, it has 2 inputs, one for cable, one for antenna.

I'm a die hard TIVO user, having the original since 2000, and now have 2 HD TIVO's.  In between I had 3 directTIVO's, when I jumped to Direct TV for 5 years.  Direct TV dropped TIVO, and by then our Comcast system had been totally rebuilt to HFC with a growing number of HD's being added.   Having Direct TV drop the TIVO's, and wanting me to invest in more non TIVO DVR hardware & a  new contract caused me to go back to CC.  I had a $1K investment in the 3 direct TIVO's that I junked because they dropped supporting them.

So I know what you mean about keep investing more and more in equipment.  The 2 HD TIVO's & subscriptions were far from cheap, as were the 3 DirectTIVO's.

I am using an antenna mounted on a 40' mastUnfortunately I can only receive FOX with reliabilityI have tried different types of antennas with no better results.

I also have been with TiVo since 2000Started with a Sony SVR-2000Increased capacity with second/larger hard drives and have been hooked ever since!!!

I am sorry about your OTA reception issues, wish I could help more.  My old TIVO is also a Sony SVR-2000 on it's 3rd hard drive (160gb), and I have the Turbonet card in it so it's doesn't have to dial in, get's it's guide data from the LAN.  Of course with the digital transistion, it is getting less usefull only getting the basic's once analog EB goes away.

"Soon" was the original answer.  Now George's answer is "No timeline available".  Not looking good at all.
Since my last post I have received a mailing stating that "HD is now available in your area".  Called up to order.  Guess what, I received the mailing in error.  Way to tease.
Comcast is eager to take my money, but does not care to offer me any new services in return.
Rant over, Bob

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

Well, it's been over a year since I started this tread.  Still waiting of HD that will be coming "soon"!

In the mean time, I have a new issue.  For the past three or so months I have had a signal issue.  Analog stations will be very fuzzy at times and the digital ones will macro-block or just drop out all together.  This is an intermittent issue and neither I nor Comcast can correlate it with any specific causes (temp, humidity, time, etc.).  Multiple techs have been out to no avail.  A few have checked the premise wiring and found no issues with it or the equipment.  One was sure that it was an amplifier in the neighborhood.  Unfortunately Comcast has no record of that tech even coming out.  Other techs have seen the problem but have no ideas.  This has been escalated to Executive Care and I have been contacted numerous times about this issue but it still persists.  If anyone has an idea of what do to next I would appreciate any input.

Thanks again, Bob

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

I am in the dover, delaware area and it bothers me that our local over the air station broadcasts in HD but we get that channel in low definition despite paying a fortune for 3 boxes and HD programming..So, our area has HD and our local station broadcasts in HD, so why don't we get the local station in HD?

Re: No HD in Dunnellon Florida !?!

I am in Central Delaware--Kent County--our local station is WBOC Saulisbury/Dover (I have a Dover address).  Delaware's southern County (Sussex) gets WBOC in high def but we get philly and baltimore.  For cripe sakes, as much as people pay for the service, why can't they provide us our local station in high def--it is the news station we use the most.  Currently, we watch the local news in the evening but switch to the philly station for the national news so we can at least watch some news in high def.
