anyone know how to get the dvr working with sony surround sound system.  not getting any sound out of the dvr to the surrond system.

You'll want to run an optical cable from the DVR to your surround sound system and disable the speakers on your TV.

you could also run an audio cable (red/white) from the audio out on your tv if it has one

The above answer does not help.

A red/white audio cable will not supply surround sound  to a AVR or other surround sound system.  Red/white only gives stereo.
